ZAMM is an acronym for ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ is a book by written by Robert Pirsig. It contains a lot of talking by Robert (mostly to himself) about a very real trip he took on a motorcycle with his son and a married couple. It really is based on real life events. If found the book charming and funny.
A lot of people think the book is IMPORTANT. Well …. most of the people who speak out loud in capital letters are wankers and posers. It might be important for the simple fact that so many people have read the book. He does discuss Zen, Art & Motorcycle Maintenance and all three of these things are a bit like the ‘why’ word. I’m not sure a definitive definition exists for these words or concepts, but if you think about them (even for an instant) you can’t prevent yourself from reacting to them in some way. That reaction, your ‘attitude’, is kinda what the book is about. Kinda.
“A motorcycle functions entirely in accordance with the laws of reason, and a study of the art of motorcycle maintenance is really a miniature study of the art of rationality itself. “–Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
The book also discusses ‘quality’, and therefore ‘quality of life’. So, whether want to wrinch on your scooter or not, just knowing a little more about how/why they work will hopefully add a bit to your scooting experience.
Also, if you ever take your scooter in to visit with the dreaded professional mechanic you will know how to respond when the ‘expert’ informs you that your “Johnson Rod” is like, totally futzed, but don’t worry cause he can fix that for a mere $200.
